Third annual fall recorded in migration to UK
The number of people migrating to the UK has fallen for the third year running, according to statistics released today.
New international migration estimates published today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that overall 151,000 more people migrated to the UK than leaving it in 2003.
This was slightly lower than the estimate of 153,000 in 2002 and estimates of between 162,000 and 172,000 per year in the preceding three years.
Migrating to the UK In 2003 were 14,200 EU citizens, 107,300 from old and new Commonwealth countries, and 114,800 citizens of other foreign countries.
The estimated number of people arriving to live in the UK for at least a year was 513,000, the same as in 2002.
The number of people leaving the UK to live elsewhere increased slightly from 359,000 in 2002 to a record 362,000 in 2003.

Over 2,000 People Use 'Help To Buy' Scheme
More than 2,000 people have put in offers on homes under the Help to Buy scheme, totalling £365 million of new mortgage lending. The applications are backed by a 'decision in principle' by RBS and Lloyds, the first two participating banks, for 95 per cent mortgages. Ten of the 2,384 applications have already completed.

UK Population To Rise By 9.6m Over 25 Years
The UK population is projected to increase by 9.6 million over the next 25 years from an estimated 63.7 million in mid-2012 to 73.3 million in mid-2037, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The UK population is also projected to reach 70 million in 2027.
