Awards recognise people tackling anti-social behaviour
One hundred local people who have stood up and taken action against anti-social behaviour in their communities are to be commended for their bravery.
At a ceremony to be held in London the winners will receive their awards from Home Office Minister Hazel Blears and TV presenter Fiona Bruce.
The Home Office 'Together Taking a Stand' awards Awards scheme is jointly supported by Crime Concern and the Co-op.
Two women Pat Majors and Doreen Sheppard from Staple Hill, Bristol were selected as overall national winners. Both became active in their community after concern at the increase in various anti-social behaviours. These included intimidation, abandoned vehicles, arson, graffiti and criminal damage.
Holding residents meetings and working closely with local agencies the duo secured one eviction, a dispersal notice, two Anti-Social Behaviour Orders, daily clean-ups and increased mental health provision in their area.
Home Office Minister Hazel Blears said: "Each and every day, local people are taking a stand against anti-social behaviour, working together to ensure our communities are safer for all.
"The Together Taking a Stand Awards recognise and reward the actions of these shining lights. They have cleaned up graffiti, organised street clean-ups, given evidence in court, organised activities for young people and set up neighbourhood watch schemes.
The Minister said the women have proved that "determined members of the public are the most effective weapon in tackling, not tolerating, anti-social behaviour".
