Walter Smith takes over as Scotland manager

Former Rangers and Everton boss Walter Smith has been named as the new manager of the Scottish national football team.

Mr Smith, who last season worked under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, was unveiled by the Scottish Football Association as successor to Berti Vogts, who resigned on November 1.

The 56-year-old Glaswegian is thought to have beaten Gordon Strachan and Frenchman Philippe Troussier to the post.

He is revered throughout the game for his achievements over the past 20 years, especially during his time at Rangers were he helped the club achieve a record breaking nine-championship wins in a row, equaling arch rivals Celtic.

Commenting on his new role, Mr Smith said: "I'm delighted. The national team manager's job is still one any coach would want and I'm looking forward to getting started.

"I've had experience with Scotland from youth to assistant level of the full national side and I'm looking forward to my own spell as team manager."

It was confirmed today that he will retain the services of assistant manager Tommy Burns, who was number two to Vogts and took charge of the team for the recent friendly against Sweden.

The first match with the new manager at the helm is expected to be against Northern Ireland in February.
