Blunkett backs community involvement in government
A change in the relationship between Government and people is vital to enable communities to have a strong voice in local decision-making, the Home Secretary, David Blunkett said yesterday.
Speaking at a major conference of public officials, community groups, Ministers and councillors, Mr Blunkett said that communities would be backed more and directed less through its new 'Together We Can' community involvement project.
Mr Blunkett said: "We need to change the relationship between Government and people. We need to build communities' capacity to engage with Government - but we also need to ensure that when they do engage, the dialogue is genuine and they have the power to genuinely bring about change.
"The Home Office's £4.3 million 'Guide Neighbourhoods' programme, launched today, will enable community organisations to learn from each other about the best ways to engage with local and central Government and get their views heard.”
The ‘Together We Can’ conference was held at the Clore conference centre, British Museum, London today. Speakers included the Home Secretary, Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, Health Minister Rosie Winterton, Cabinet Minister Ian McCartney and Founder of the New Local Government Network Gerry Stoker.
