Larne to Cairnryan ferry refloated after 30 hours
A car ferry blown onto a sand bank by hurricane force winds while attempting to dock at Cairnryan on the west coast of Scotland has been successfully refloated.
At high tide on Sunday morning, tugs from Greenock managed to pull the P&O vehicle ferry 'European Highlander' off a sand bank.
The Larne to Cairnryan ferry with 100 passengers and crew aboard got into difficulties in Lough Ryan after high winds struck the ferry while it was moving at slow speed prior to docking. The hurricane force gust blew the ferry onto a sand bank just 100 metres from the terminal.
Passengers and crew aboard the vessel were stranded for 30 hours while tugs reached the scene and waited for the next suitable high tide on which to free the ferry.
P&O said that there was no danger to the passengers or crew during the incident, but that the bar had been closed for safety reasons.
Divers inspected the ferry's hull and there is understood to be negligible damage.
However, as a precaution the ferry will be dry docked in Liverpool where a full hull inspection will be carried out.
