Stone loses appeal over Russell murders
Michael Stone (43), found guilty in 1998 of the brutal murders of Lin and Megan Russell, has had his second appeal against conviction rejected at London's High Court.
While walking along a country lane in Kent in 1996, Dr Lin Russell (45) and her daughter Megan (6) were bludgeoned to death with a hammer, while the third victim, Megan's sister Josie (aged nine at the time of the attack), survived despite horrific head injuries. Stone's appeal against his conviction for the attempted murder of Josie was also rejected.
Stone's original convictions and triple-life sentence, secured largely on the testimony of key prosecution witness Barry Thompson, were overturned when Thompson later admitted he had lied.
Stone was retried in 2001 and again convicted, this time on the highly controversial evidence of Damien Daley, a heroin addict and fellow inmate at Canterbury Prison who claimed he heard a voice through a heating pipe admitting to the Russell murders.
Complaints about Daley's evidence helped Stone secure the right to the appeal that was today rejected.
Stone, who has always denied the murders, returns to prison to complete his three life sentences, but campaigners say they will take his fight to the House of Lords.
