Shipman victims' families contact police in jewellery plea
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that 16 families have come forward after it was announced that a large amount of jewellery was found in mass murderer Harold Shipman's garage.
Police said that around £10,000 worth of jewellery, including rings, brooches, earrings, bracelets and necklaces, was recovered from Dr Shipman's garage following his arrest.
Police contacted around 180 families of Shipman's victims to see if anyone could identify any of the items that had been recovered. Detective Superintendent Steve Heywood confirmed today that 16 families had contacted the police regarding the jewellery. Detective Superintendent Heywood said that they would be meeting with the families in order to try and identify some of the pieces "in the near future".
If the jewellery is not claimed, it is possible that it could be returned to Dr Shipman's widow, Primrose.
An inquiry into the murders committed by Dr Shipman found that he murdered at least 250 of his patients between 1971 and 1998.
