Unemployment rate increases by 0.1%
UK unemployment has risen again, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) has reported.
According to the latest figures, the unemployment rate increased to 4.8% in the last quarter, an increase from 4.7% the previous quarter. The number of unemployed people rose to 1.43 million, an increase of 29,000. The ONS reported that women accounted for “almost all” of the increase in unemployment.
The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance benefit also increased by 11,000 in March, reaching 828,700.
However, in spite of the increase in unemployment, the number of people in work is continuing to rise, the ONS figures showed. The employment rate for working age people was 75% for the three months ending in February 2005 – an increase from 74.8% the previous quarter.
The ONS reported that the number of people in employment increased by 148,000 over the quarter and by 231,000 over the year, to reach 28.64 million.
The annual rate of growth in average earnings (the AEI) was 4.3% in February, excluding bonuses, a drop from 4.4% the previous month, which indicates that wage pressures remain subdued in spite of the relative strength of the labour market.
