Personal poster war erupt between parties
The Conservatives have launched a personal attack on the integrity of Prime Minister Tony Blair with their latest poster campaign as the election race runs into its last week.
The Conservatives latest campaign poster features a picture of Mr Blair alongside a caption which declares: “If he’s prepared to lie to take us to war, he’s prepared to lie to win an election.”
The Conservatives claim the message behind the poster is, if the Prime Minister failed to tell the truth about the reasons for going to war in Iraq, he will do the same about third term tax rises.
Conservative co-chairman Liam Fox said: “Trust is now a central issue in this campaign. Mr Blair told us that the evidence for Iraqi weapons of mass destruction was extensive and detailed and yet we know the Prime Minister had been told that this evidence was patchy and sporadic. He has lied about Conservative economic policies and Conservative health proposals, but this is not surprising.”
Conservative leader Michael Howard last week challenged Mr Blair to remove all Labour campaign material, which suggested that an incoming Conservative government would introduce charges for NHS operations. Mr Howard said that he was “totally opposed” to the suggestion.
However, Mr Blair refused to withdraw the claims, saying that it was “his policy, not ours, and if he is embarassed by it, it is up to him to withdraw his policy.”
Labour has continued to criticise what the party calls the Conservatives “hidden agenda” on the NHS. Their new campaign poster depicts a sleeping Michael Howard, appearing to dream of charging people for hospital operations. Underneath the pillow, a document bearing the title ‘Tory hidden agenda’ can be seen. The poster’s tagline says: “Vote Labour. Or wake up with Michael Howard”.
Labour have focused on the economy in their latest newspaper ad, which shows a red forward-facing arrow containing the words “Lowest mortgage rates for 40 years”, while on a blue, backward-facing arrow points out 15% interest rates under the previous Conservative government.
Commenting on the Conservative attacks, Mr Blair said: “I don’t care in the least about the Tory attacks on my character. I do care about the future of this country. I will carry on talking about the issues that matter to the hard-working families of this country: the economy, the NHS, schools and law and order.”
