Abigail transferred to spinal injuries unit
Abigail Witchalls, the young mother who was stabbed in the neck in a horrific attack two weeks ago, has been transferred to a specialist spinal injuries unit.
The 26-year-old had been in St George’s Hospital in Tooting, south London since the attack, which left her paralysed. She was transferred to the specialist unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore today.
A spokesperson at St George’s said that Abigail was in a stable condition and was in “good spirits”, although she remains paralysed.
The spokesperson also said that Abigail and her family had expressed thanks for the care she had received at St Georges and also said that they were “grateful” for the public support received since the attack.
Abigail was attacked while returning home from a mother and toddler meeting in Little Bookham, Surrey, with her 21-month-old son Joseph. The attacker first held a knife to Joseph’s throat before stabbing Abigail in the back of the neck.
Last week, Abigail was able to provide police with a detailed description of the attacker. Although she has been unable to speak since the attack, she was able to communicate with police officers by mouthing words and blinking.
Police arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with the attack on Abigail, last week, but he was later released without charge.
Detectives are expected to interview Abigail again in order to gain more information about the stabbing and her attacker.
Police are also working on a “CD-fit” image of the attacker, as well as a full reconstruction of Abigail’s walk from the mothers and toddlers meeting she attended to the lane where she was attacked.
A detailed reconstruction will take place over the coming weeks.
