Bombing kills pilgrims at Pakistani shrine

At least 18 people are feared killed and dozens more injured, when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a Muslim shrine in Pakistan today.

The blast occurred when hundreds of pilgrims were attending an annual religious celebration at the Bari Imam shrine in the capital of Islamabad.

Local police said that initial information suggested the bombing was a suicide attack. It has yet to be confirmed how many were killed or wounded.

Most of the worshippers were Shi’ites and Sunni Muslims.

In recent years, sporadic sectarian violence in Pakistan has been typified by bomb blasts, suicide bombings and a number of targeted killings.

Shi’ite Muslims make up a 20% minority of Pakistan’s predominantly Muslim population of 150 million.
