Traditional painter gets Turner Prize nomination
A traditional painter, specialising in landscapes, still life and portraits, has been short-listed for the controversial Turner Prize.
Gillian Carnegie is one of four artists short-listed for this year’s Turner Prize, which in previous years as been awarded to such controversial artists as Damien Hirst.
The other nominees are: Darren Almond, whose work encompasses a wide range of media, including film, photography and sculpture; Jim Lambie, who creates installations and sculptures referencing pop music and youth culture; and Simon Starling, who recycles objects in his sculptural installations.
The winner of the Turner Prize will receive £25,000, while each short-listed artist will receive £5,000 each.
Works by the nominated artists will be exhibited at the Tate Britain museum from October 18. The winner of the prize will be announced on December 5 during a live broadcast by Channel 4.
The Turner Prize, established in 1984, is awarded to a British artist under 50, for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the 12 months preceding May 11, 2005.

West Midlands Police has said it could launch an investigation following claims that a Channel 4 documentary about benefit claimants revealed elements of criminal activity. A novel inspired by the murder of toddler James Bulger has been shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal for children’s literature. ‘Looking for JJ’, by Anne Cassidy tells the story of a ten-year-old girl who is jailed after murdering another child.
