Saudi King Fahd dies in hospital
King Fahd of Saudi Arabia has died, it has been announced.
King Fahd, who has reigned as the country’s monarch since 1982, died in the King Faisal Specialised Hospital in the capital, Riyadh, on Monday.
He had been admitted to hospital on May 27 for unspecified medical tests. He had suffered from ill health for a number of years, since suffering a stroke in 1995.
Crown Prince Abdullah has been named as King Fahd’s successor.
Prime Minister Tony Blair has paid tribute to King Fahd, describing him as a man of “great vision and leadership”.
Mr Blair said: “He served his country with the utmost dedication and dignity. He led Saudi Arabia through a period of unparalleled prosperity and development.
“He was also a good friend of the United Kingdom. Our two countries have benefited very greatly over the years from his wise advice. Under his guidance, we have developed extremely close political, commercial and defence links. They will always be seen as his legacy.”

Boy Found Hanged By Grandmother
A young boy has been found hanged at his Lancashire home. Eight-year-old Joshua Aldred was found unconscious in his bedroom by his grandmother in Lytham on Thursday evening. He was admitted to Blackpool hospital but was pronounced dead after attempts to resuscitate him failed.

RAF Hercules Airlifts Premature Newborn Twins
Twins born prematurely have been airlifted by an RAF Hercules aircraft from the Outer Hebrides to a hospital on the Scottish mainland, in an emergency rescue operation. The mother of the babies went into labour at 27 weeks and gave birth in hospital in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis on Sunday.

Camilla recovering after hysterectomy
The Duchess of Cornwall is said to be "recovering well" following a hysterectomy operation. Camilla, 59, checked into the exclusive King Edward VII Hospital for the planned operation on Monday. The Duchess recently undertook a ten-day tour of the Gulf with the Prince of Wales, returning to the UK a few days ago.

Reid gives 'green light' for £4bn PFI hospital deal
The 'green light' has been given for 15 new NHS hospital developments in a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) deal worth more than £4 billion, it has been announced today. Today's announcement will bring investment in new NHS hospitals to more than £16 billion since 1997, the health department said.

Rescuer injured as helicopter strikes mountainside
A member of a civilian mountain rescue team is being treated for injuries received after he fell from a search and rescue helicopter that struck a mountainside in the Lake District. The man is reported to have sustained serious injuries when he fell some 40 feet from the Royal Navy Sea King helicopter.
