Owen agrees move to Newcastle
Real Madrid striker Michael Owen is to return to the Premiership after signing a four-year deal with Newcastle United.
The Magpies announced the signing of the 25-year-old former Liverpool player on Tuesday, for a fee believed to be in the region of £17 million. The fee is a record for Newcastle United, topping the £15 million paid for captain Alan Shearer in 1996.
The announcement comes after Owen held talks with Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd, manager Graeme Souness and Alan Shearer.
It was a surprising turn of events, since Owen has always said that he would prefer to return to his former club, Liverpool and would only be interested in joining Newcastle for a one-year loan. However, Liverpool were believed to be reluctant to pay any more for their former player than the £8 million they sold him for.
Owen is due to undergo a medical on Tuesday afternoon. He is poised to take the Number 10 jersey at St. James Park.
In a statement on Newcastle United’s website, chairman Freddy Shepherd said: “Bringing Michael to St. James Park will rank alongside the signing of Alan Shearer as my proudest moment at Newcastle United.
“Newcastle fans love centre-forwards and Michael is a fantastic goalscorer. He’s someone we would love to build the team around and we hope he can help us bring success to the club.”
