UK is sleepwalking into segregation, says Phillips
Race equality chief, Trevor Phillips, has warned the UK is sleepwalking its way to racial segregation.
Phillips, Chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), has described the July terror attacks as a “nightmare”, and fears some areas are turning into “literal black holes”.
He also announced that the CRE is to hand over £2m towards organising integrated sports activities to help people get along with each other.
He said: “We are sleepwalking our way to segregation. We are becoming strangers to each other and leaving communities to be marooned outside the mainstream.”
It is claimed he will put forward new measures which include ‘white’ schools to take in larger numbers of ethnic minorities.
New research by the CRE also suggests that children mixing in integrated schools might also help to break down the barriers between communities.
