Helicopter rescues crew from two capsized yachts
The four crew from two 60ft racing trimarans capsized when a gale hit their yachts in the early hours of Tuesday morning have been rescued by a French helicopter.
The 'Fonica' and 'Orange Project' capsized a few miles from each other and British Coastguard and French authorities co-ordinated the final rescue of the sailors by helicopter.
The French Coastguard air-sea rescue helicopter reached Fonica this afternoon following a refuelling stop on the aircraft carrier Jeanne d'Arc.
It is reported that Fonica's co-skipper Damien Foxall has sustained shoulder and rib injuries, and may have a broken collarbone. Fonica's other co-skipper Armel Le Cleach was rescued by the helicopter before it rescued Steve and Yvan Ravussin from Orange Project.
Earlier today, a Nimrod aircraft equipped for air sea rescue operations, dropped life-rafts close to the overturned yachts - the co-skippers were reported to have been clinging to the hull.
A third offshore racing trimaran which was dismasted has been taken in tow by a French fishing vessel.
All three crippled yachts were 60ft trimarans taking part in the Transat Jacques Vabre passage race from Le Havre to Brazil.
A fourth trimaran, 'Brossard', was forced into Guernsey on Monday night when the main hull developed a serious crack. Several other boats suffered gear damage and one has since retired from the race. making for the Spanish coast.
British yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur is one of the co-skippers aboard one of the leading yachts in the race which includes both multi-hills and monohull yachts.
