West Midlands police said that a Central Motorway Police Group patrol car had spotted two cars travelling at speed on the A41 in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The patrol car followed the cars, continuing to follow a black Nissan Primera, after the two cars separated.
The Nissan then crashed into a lamppost and a derelict shop in Great Hampton Street in Hockley, around 1:30am.
Police said that they believed that four men were in the car at the time of the accident. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem is due to take place shortly.
