Merkel sworn in as Geman Chancellor

Germany has sworn in its first female Chancellor today as the leader of the conservative Christian Democrats takes over the reins of the largest EU country.

Angela Merkel, 51, was sworn in at the Presidential Palace where she was given her letter of office confirming her appointment by the Bundestag.

Dubbed the German Thatcher, MPs voted 397 to 202 to make Ms Merkel not only the first woman to hold the highest office in Germany, but also the first person from the former East Germany to hold the post.

Ms Merkel will now be faced with the task of holding together her coalition partnership, formed with the Christian Social Union and the centre-left Social Democrats, as she attempts to turn round Europe's biggest economy.

The previous Chancellor, Social Democrat leader Gerhard Schroeder, who held power for seven years, has announced that he will be resigning from politics. However, under the coalition government the Social Democrats will gain key ministerial appointments.

The German Chancellor will meet with French President Jacques Chirac on Wednesday, before heading on to Brussels for meetings with EU and Nato officials.

She will then meet with British Prime Minister Tony Blair in London.
