Halifax reports further house price rises

The Halifax has reported an increase in house prices of 1.2% in November.

The building society said that prices had increased overall by 4.7% overall in the past six months, while house prices rose by 4.5% on an annual basis.

The average house in the UK now cost £170,086, the Halifax reported.

Martin Ellis, Chief Economist, said: “The high level of employment and good earnings growth continues to underpin housing demand.

“The slowdown in UK economic growth over the past year and the historically high level of house prices relative to average earnings are, however, expected to curb the recent improvement in housing demand and prevent another sustained period of sharply rising property values.”

According to the Bank of England, the number of mortgage approvals to fund house purchase increased for the fourth successive month in October. The number of loans, at 113,000, was also 35% higher than in October 2004.

The Halifax’s figures follow those from the Nationwide, which suggested that house prices had remained unchanged during November, bringing the annual rate of house price inflation down to 2.4% from 3.3% in October.
