Gender equality still years away
It could take decades before gender equality is achieved according to the latest research.
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) said that progress towards women achieving the same status as men in the work place was "painfully slow", despite the fact that women now make up nearly half the workforce.
The EOC's survey of senior jobs in both the private and public sector found that women held only around one in ten senior positions in the FTSE 100 companies, judiciary and police.
The situation is slightly better among professional bodies where nearly one third of the positions are held by females.
However, although one fifth of MPs are female, the EOC warned that it could take 200 years before gender equality was achieved in Parliament.
EOC chairwoman Jenny Watson said: "Thirty years on from the Sex Discrimination Act, it is time for us to face some stark facts.
"Women will not make it to the top in significant numbers unless action is taken to remove the barriers that stand in their way."
