Blair met 100th dead British soldier

The latest British solider to die in Iraq met Tony Blair during the Prime Minister's pre-Christmas visit to the country, it has emerged.

Corporal Gordon Pritchard met Mr Blair when he visited the Shaibah logistics base in Southern Iraq just before Christmas.

The 31-year-old father-of-three was killed yesterday in Um Qasr, in the Basra Province, when a roadside bomb blast hit the Land Rover in which he was travelling.

Three other soldiers, all from the same regiment - the 7th Armoured Brigade - were injured in the blast.

The soldier's death in Iraq, the 100th fatality, sparked fresh calls for British troops to be withdrawn from Iraq. The Stop the War Coalition is organising around 100 vigils across the nation tonight to mark the UK death toll in Iraq.

The coalition's spokesperson Andrew Burgin said: "What is remarkable is that when another soldier dies, more or less the families say the same things - why were they there?"

On Wednesday, it was reported that Foreign Secretary Jack Straw had hinted that UK troops could begin withdrawing from Iraq within the year.
