Smoking ban to be in place by 2007
Anti-smoking an health lobby groups have welcomed the vote to ban smoking in all pubs, clubs and restaurants in England by 2007, though opponents see the ban as another loss to civil liberty.
Anti-smoking group Ash say that at present, more than two million people in England and Wales work in places where smoking is allowed throughout and another ten million in places were smoking is allowed somewhere on the premises.
Ash said that the vote would save "hundreds of lives of non-smokers" and the lives of those smokers who would use the new law as a reason to quit.
The Government estimates that some 700,000 smokers will quit across England as a result of the ban.
Deborah Arnott, Director of ASH said: “We are absolutely delighted that MPs have listened to the arguments, looked at the evidence and decided that comprehensive smokefree legislation is a cause whose time has come. England will now see the same benefits from this law as Ireland already has, and as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland shortly will."
Yesterday evening's free vote was carried by a 200 vote margin, despite fears that there would be a backlash over exemptions to private clubs and pubs no selling food.
The ban will not apply to private homes, residential care homes, and prisons.
A smoking ban comes into force in Scotland on 26 March this year, and in Northern Ireland in April next year. The Welsh Assembly are considering a smoking ban.
