Cause of Buncefield explosions still unknown
The lead investigator in the inquiry into the explosions at the Buncefield oil depot has said that it is still unclear what caused the blasts.
Taf Powell said that he could not say "with sufficient confidence" exactly how the blasts, which rocked the oil depot last December, occurred. He said: "There appear to have been several explosions but the exact sequence of events has not yet been established."
It is understood that a "fog" of petrol and water, 200 yards wide, was seen over the depot prior to the explosions on December 11 last year.
It is also believed that fuel escaped from one of the tanks on the site.
It has also emerged that the Health and Safety Executive was investigating a small leak at the depot around two or three weeks before the blast.
Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, inquiry chairman Lord Newton said that there had been "extensive damage" at the site and the inquiry had been delayed because the site was still unsafe.
The investigation, which is being conducted by the Health and Safety Executive and the Environment Agency, was launched following the explosions at the depot, the fifth largest duel distribution depot in the country.
No one was killed, but forty-three people were injured.

Britons injured in Turkey bomb blasts
Ten Britons are among those injured in a number of explosions at a Turkish holiday resort. It is understood that three explosions in the town of Marmaris on Sunday night, with the main explosion taking place on a minibus carrying tourists in the centre of the town. Eleven Turkish nationals are also reported to have been injured in the blasts.

Blasts reported at Baghdad hotels
Eleven people have been reported dead following three explosions near hotels used by foreign journalists in Baghdad. The blasts took place near the Palestine and Sheraton hotels in the city centre. It is thought that rockets caused two of the explosions, while the third blast is believed to have been caused by a car bomb.

Main fires extinguished at oil depot
The main fires at Buncefield oil depot in Hemel Hempstead have been extinguished, it has been reported. Many people have also been able to return to homes and businesses near the depot, while schools that had been closed are now likely to re-open tomorrow.

£2m reward offered for £50m robbery gang
Police are hunting an armed gang that made off with around £50 million from a Kent security depot on Wednesday morning. The gang, described as "dangerous" by police, held the depot manager and his family hostage for more than six hours while the raid was being carried out.

Army chief blasts Ministry of Defence pay
General Sir Mike Jackson has roundly criticised army pay and conditions during the annual BBC Dimbleby lecture. Sir Mike, who retired as the head of the army in August, said pay was "hardly impressive" and that conditions in some of the accommodation were "shaming." He said that as he was now a civilian he was entitled to have his say in public.
