Man found not guilty of Damilola murder
A 20-year-old man has been found not guilty of the murder of schoolboy Damilola Taylor in south London.
Hassan Jihad was cleared on charges of murder, manslaughter and assault with intent to rob at the Old Bailey today.
The jury is still considering verdicts on the same charges against two brothers, aged 17 and 18, who cannot be named for legal reasons. The judge told the jury that he would accept majority verdicts on the other two defendants.
Damilola, 10, bled to death in a stairwell on an estate in Peckham in November 2000, after suffering a wound to his left thigh.
The prosecution had alleged that Damilola was attacked with a broken bottle in an attempted robbery. However, an expert who testified for the defence suggested that Damilola could have sustained the fatal injury after falling on a bottle.
Four youths, all aged under 18, were cleared of the schoolboy's murder following a trial in 2002.
