Inquest rules British filmmaker's killing 'unlawful'

A UK Coroner's Court has ruled that a British cameraman who was shot dead in the Gaza Strip by an Israeli soldier was unlawfully killed.

James Miller, 34, from Devon, was shot by a soldier from the Israeli Defence Force while he was making a film in the Palestinian refugee camp at Rafah in May 2003.

Coroner Andrew Reid told the inquest jury at St Pancras Coroner's Court, London, to return a verdict of unlawful killing.

The jury's spokeswoman said: "We, the jury, unanimously agree that this was an unlawful shooting with the intention to kill Mr James Miller.

"Therefore we can come to no other conclusion that Mr Miller was indeed murdered."

The spokeswoman also said that the Israeli authorities had "not been forthcoming" in the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr Miller's death.

The verdict came following a three-day inquest into the cameraman's death.

During the hearing, the jury heard how Mr Miller had been making a film about Palestinian children in the Rafah camp. He was trying to ask soldiers if it was safe to leave when he was fatally wounded in the neck.
