Bowyer receives speeding ban

Premiership footballer Lee Bowyer has been banned from driving after pleading guilty to speeding.

The 29-year-old Newcastle United midfielder changed his plea to guilty before the start of his trial.

At South East Northumberland Magistrates Court in Hexham on Wednesday, Bowyer admitted driving at 99mph on the A1 near Morpeth, Northumberland last July.

The footballer received a 42-day driving ban and was fined £650. He was also ordered to pay £100 in costs.

BP Tanker Drivers To Strike Over Pension And Pay Dispute
Grangemouth oil refinery tanker drivers will walk out for three days next Friday in a dispute over pensions and pay. The Unite members at the Forth estuary facility, employed by BP, will also ban overtime from Monday in action the union said would hit aviation supplies and deliveries to BP forecourts across Scotland and the north east of England.

MPs set to debate smoking plans
MPs will debate government plans to introduce a partial smoking ban in England and Wales, when the legislation returns to the House of Commons for its second reading today. The Health Bill includes proposals to introduce a smoking ban in public places, but with exemptions for pubs and bars, which do not serve food and private members’ clubs.

Scottish executive backs smoking ban
The Scottish executive has today confirmed that it will seek a total ban on smoking in enclosed public places. In order to enforce the ban, pubs and restaurants that fail to enforce the law will face fines up to a maximum of £2,500.

Banned Teacher Loses Legal Challenge Against Michael Gove
A teacher who claimed he was banned from teaching for life because he is a British National Party (BNP) activist has lost a legal challenge over the band. 44-year-old Adam Walker was given a suspended sentence for verbally abusing three boys and dangerous driving and was subsequently struck off the teaching register for life.

Driving Ban For Cole
Premier League footballer Ashley Cole has been given a four month driving ban after being caught driving at 104mph in a 50mph zone. The Chelsea player sped his Lamborghini along the A3 in Kingston, south-west London, just after midday on 17 November 2008.
