Work resumes at Peugeot plant
Production is resuming at the Peugeot plant near Coventry today, following the announcement that the plant is to close with the loss of 2,300 jobs.
French car manufacturer Peugeot-Citroen announced on Tuesday that the plant in Ryton, near Coventry would close in mid-2007. The firm said that the plant, which makes Peugeot's 206 model, was no longer competitive and had high logistical costs.
According to reports on Wednesday, Peugeot will continue to employ 1,000 people at two other Coventry bases when Ryton closes.
Unions have threatened strike action over the closure plans. On Wednesday, Des Quinn from the Transport and General Workers said that union members were “very angry” about the closure and warned that Peugeot-Citroen would not “get away with a trouble-free closure” of the plant.
Officials from Amicus and the TGWU are due to meet with management today to discuss the closure.
Trade and Industry Secretary Alan Johnson and Coventry and Warwickshire Councils have expressed hopes that manufacturing jobs can be retained at the site after the closure of the Peugeot plant.
