Probe launched into Spurs food poisoning case

An investigation is underway by health officials after a number of Totttenham Hotspur footballers fell ill with food poisoning hours before a crucial Premiership match.

Several of the team's players, including Robbie Keane, Aaron Lennon, Michael Carrick and Edgar Davids, were taken ill ahead of the team's final match at West Ham.

Police were called to the Marriott Hotel in east London were the Spurs team stayed ahead of the match and food examples were taken away to be examined.

However, Scotland Yard said that the food samples had been removed "as a precaution" and stressed that no official allegations had been received.

Tottenham lost the match 2-1. They had needed to win in order to secure fourth place in the Premiership and a place in the Champions League.

North London rivals Arsenal, who had been a point behind Spurs, beat Wigan 4-2 in their last match, and secured fourth place.

The West Ham-Tottenham match had been thrown into doubt by the food poisoning bug. Spurs manager Martin Jol had called for the match to be postponed until later on Sunday or until Monday.

However, Premier League officials said that it would not be possible to postpone the match because Spurs had enough fit players for the game to go ahead.
