World War II bomb safely detonated
The World War II bomb which was discovered in the River Mersey on Monday night has been safely detonated in the Irish Sea.
A Royal Navy bomb disposal team had towed the bomb, understood to be a German air-drop explosive, to North Bar Light - an area identified as being safe to detonate the bomb by the coastguard - on Tuesday. It was safely detonated around 21.00 BST on Tuesday night.
The discovery of the bomb led to the passengers and crew of two ferries being stranded on their ships in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The Mersey Viking, travelling from Belfast and the Dublin Viking, were ordered to wait further up the River Mersey when they arrived in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The two ferries were eventually allowed to berth on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mersey Viking was carrying 64 passengers and 55 crew, while the Dublin Viking was carrying 81 passengers and 46 crew.
The bomb was discovered at the Twelve Quays dock at Birkenhead.
