Climbie parents call for action following report

The parents of Victoria Climbie have called on the government not to let her death be in vain, following a report which revealed that many NHS Trusts have not implemented key recommendations proposed after her death.

The survey of 175 NHS acute hospital trusts was conducted by Five News. The report found that of the 62 that replied, more than two thirds admitted that not all the recommendations from Lord Laming's inquiry into eight-year-old Victoria's death had been implemented.

Victoria died in February 2000 after enduring months of torture and abuse. She was found to have 128 injuries to her body.

Her great aunt Marie Therese Kouao and her boyfriend Carl Manning were jailed for life in January 2001 for the eight-year-old's murder.

Lord Laming's inquiry found that child protection services had missed at least 12 chances to save Victoria's life.

Speaking to Five News from Abidjan on the Ivory Coast, Victoria's father Francis urged the Health Minister Patricia Hewitt to take responsibility for the situation. He said: "The government can give all the money it likes, but if the services do not communicate with each other, then it's logical - the child protection system will always fail."
