Pensioner's remains reburied

The body of a pensioner whose remains were dug up and stolen by animal activists have finally been reburied.

The body of Gladys Hammond was finally returned to her original grave at St Peter's Church in Yoxall, Staffordshire, where she was originally buried on May 28, 1997.

Her remains had been found on Cannock Chase, near Hednesford, earlier this month, eighteen months after they were stolen.

Mrs Hammond's body was stolen by animal rights activists, who had carried out a six-year intimidation campaign against the Darley Oaks Farm, which had bred guinea pigs for medical research. The 82-year-old was the mother-in-law of one of the co-owners of the farm in Newchurch, Staffordshire.

In January this year, the farm ceased breeding guinea pigs for medical research.

Earlier this month, three animal rights activists - John Ablewhite, from Manchester, Kerry Whitburn, from Edgbaston, and John Smith, from Wolverhampton - were hailed for 12 years each after pleading guilty to carrying out the intimidation campaign against Darley Oaks Farm.

Another activist, Josephine Mayo, from Edgbaston, was jailed for four years.
