Two tankers collide in English Channel

Two vessels have collided in the English Channel, the Coastguard has reported.

According to Dover Coastguard, the two vessels - the MV Willy and the MV Shakhdag - collided at around 1120 BST on Friday, around 20 miles south of Shoreham.

Both vessels immediately contacted the Coastguard to report the collision.

The MV Willy, which was on passage to a refinery at Stanlow, was in ballast and reported minor damage, which is a split midships in the ballast tank along the upper deck.

The MV Shakhdag, which had a cargo of 44,000 metric tonnes of diesel oil on board, sustained some superficial damage to the main deck on the stern and some upper deck equipment.

Nobody was hurt in the incident and both vessels are now proceeding under their own power.

A Coastguard rescue helicopter from Lee on Solent was scrambled to overfly the area and confirmed that there was no leakage from either vessel, although the area will be monitored.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency surveyor has now been airlifted by the helicopter to the Shakhdag to inspect it to ensure that it is safe to enter Portland to discharge its cargo.

The agency have also put their Counter Pollution team on standby.

The Secretary of State's representative is working closely with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in this incident and the French Maritime Administration have offered any assistance if required.
