Police numbers continue to rise
The number of police officers in England and Wales is continuing to rise, hitting a new high of 141,381, according to Home Office figures.
Home Office Minister Tony McNulty announced that all groups across the police service - police officers, special constables, community support officers (CSOs) and police staff - have seen an increase in staff numbers.
Police officer numbers have increased by 151 since March 2005, while the number of special constables increased by 1,261 to 13,179 and the number of CSOs rose by over 500 to 6,769.
Commenting on the figures, Mr McNulty said: "It is excellent news that police officer numbers continue to rise. However, the way in which policing is delivered is just as important. That's why we are placing more focus on how police are deployed alongside other law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, as well as how they work together with the wider police family to reduce crime and fear of crime in our communities."
