Cider 'may offer health benefits'

Scientists from the University of Glasgow are examining whether drinking cider could offer the same health benefits as eating apples.

Researchers found high levels of phenolic antioxidants - linked to protection against strokes, heart disease and cancer - in English cider apples.

They now plan to analyse how humans could absorb the chemicals from the cider.

Twelve volunteers will participate in the tests, where they will each be asked to drink a pint of cider.

The scientists will then check samples of their urine and blood to see if the antioxidants have been absorbed into the body.

Dr Serena Marks, who is leading the study, said: "Previous research suggests there may be an association between phenolics and protection against some serious diseases, so we're trying to find out how we get phenolics from our diet."
