Sir Menzies wins Lib Dem tax vote
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell has won a crucial vote on taxation policy at the party's conference in Brighton.
Following a debate at the conference, Sir Menzies saw delegates vote to scrap plans to propose a 50p tax rate on the highest earners, in favour of plans, supported by the party leader, to introduce income tax cuts for low and middle earners, as well as plans to introduce taxes on non-environmentally friendly cars.
The plans would see an increase on taxes on 'gas-guzzling' cars and aircraft, in order to finance plans to introduce a 2% cut in the basic rate of income tax, which the Liberal Democrats said would free two million from paying any income tax.
The debate over taxation came as former party leader Charles Kennedy prepared to return to the party spotlight with a speech at the conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Mr Kennedy, who quit the position in January after admitting to having a drink problem, received a standing ovation from delegates at the conference before he delivered his speech. The former leader stressed his loyalty to Sir Menzies and expressed his desire to stay in politics during his speech.

More Fall Into Debt Following HMRC Overpayments
The number of issues reported to Citizens Advice of people falling into debt as a result of repaying overpaid tax credits increased by 14 per cent in the 2013/14 tax year. Tax Credit debts arise when HMRC over-estimates a person’s entitlement to financial support and ends up having to recoup overpayments.
