Man jailed for life for 'double jeopardy' murder

A man has been jailed for life after being tried for the second time for the murder of his girlfriend.

William Dunlop was sentenced to a minimum 17-year sentence for the murder of 22-year-old Julie Hogg in 1989.

Dunlop had been cleared of the murder of Ms Hogg in 1991, after two juries failed to reach verdicts.

Ms Hogg, who was from Billingham, Teeside, had initially been reported as missing but her mother, Ann Ming, eventually discovered her body behind a bath panel.

In 1999, Dunlop eventually confessed to a prison officer that he had murdered Ms Hogg, while in jail for another assault, knowing that he could not be retried.

He was jailed for six years for perjury, but was charged with murder again this year after the 800-year-old double jeopardy law in England and Wales was changed.
