Fatal train crash in Rome

At least one person has been killed and over a hundred injured when two trains collided on the metro system in Rome.

The crash, which happened during the morning rush hour, occurred at the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II underground station.

According to eyewitness reports, one train ran into the back of another which had already stopped at the platform.

The only fatality confirmed so far is a 30-year-old woman. Initially, it was reported that two people had been killed and that one of them was the driver of the second train. However, this is understood to have been denied by the metro company.

Several people are understood to have suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Earlier, there were reports that some people remained trapped in the wreckage, although it has now been reported that everyone on board both trains have been rescued.
