Police chiefs hold conference on gun crime
Police chiefs are holding a conference on gun-related crime following a series of high-profile shootings.
The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) are expected to agree a strategy on gun crime and announce tactics following the meeting today.
Proposals are expected to include a new firearms forensics unit with a dedicated database of recovered weapons.
Official statistics indicate that gun crime decreased by 8%, but two recent killings and the court case in relation to the murder of PC Sharon Beshenivsky has raised the profile of gun crime.
Two youths were shot dead in a fast food restautrant in south London earlier this month.
A 15-year-old teenager was gunned down in Manchester earlier this week.
A student at the Manchester Academy, Jessie James was shot three times in the city's Moss Side district, on Raby Street, in the early hours of September 9.
It is thought the attack may have been gang-related, and Jessie was a victim of mistaken identity.
