British soldier killed in Basra
A British soldier has died during an attack on an army base in Basra, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
The soldier, who has not been named, was from the 2nd Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.
It is understood that the soldier was killed when the base came under small arms fire.
There were no other casualties in the incident.
The MoD said that the soldier's family had been informed of the death.
Defence Secretary Des Browne said: "I was deeply saddened to hear that a soldier from the 2nd Battalion Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment had died whilst serving his country in Iraq.
"His family, friends and comrades, as ever, have my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Our brave forces are striving to build a better future for the people of Iraq and this is a stark reminder to us all of the dangers they face there."

A British soldier has been killed in a road accident in southern Iraq, it has been announced today. Rifleman Vincent Windsor, a member of 2nd Battalion The Royal Green Jackets, was killed in an accident on January 21 in Al Amarah. He was the 57th British soldier to die since the beginning of hostilies on March 19 last year.

The Ministry of Defence has released the names of three soldiers killed in Iraq on Thursday. Corporal Paul Joszko, from 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh and Privates Scott Kennedy and James Kerr, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, were killed in a roadside bomb attack in Basra.
