Mastermind host Magnusson dies

Magnus Magnusson, the former presenter of BBC quiz show 'Mastermind', has died at the age of 77.

The TV presenter, journalist and writer, who become a household name with his famous catchphrase "I've started so I'll finish", died at his home near Glasgow last night.

He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last October.

Magnusson was born in Reykjavik, but grew up in Edinburgh after moving to Scotland.

Magnusson graduated from Jesus College, Oxford, and became a reporter with the 'Scottish Daily Express' and 'The Scotsman'. He went freelance in 1967 and then joined the BBC, where he presented programmes on history and archaeology, as well as appearing in news programmes.

He presented 'Mastermind' for 25 years after it was first shown in 1972.

Magnusson is survived by his wife Mamie, to whom he was married for 52 years, and his four surviving children Sally, Margaret, Anna and Jon. His eldest son Siggy died in 1973.

His family released a statement which said: "Magnus was the most generous, steadfast, loving and loved of husbands and fathers. He taught each of us how to live, and in the last few weeks he has taught us how to die. He did both with infinite grace."

Mark Thompson, Director-General of the BBC, said: "For millions of viewers Magnus Magnusson was one of the defining faces and voices of the BBC.

"To the contestants of Mastermind, he was a tough but always fair question master, but behind this screen persona there was a family man of tremendous warmth and humanity.

"All out thoughts are with his family at this very sad time, and everyone at the BBC will share their tremendous sense of loss."
