Ferry officer in court over sailors' deaths
A 61-year-old P&O employee has appeared in court charged with manslaughter, due to gross negligence, of three sailors.
Michael Hubble, of Folkestone in Kent, appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court charged with the manslaughter of Jason Downer, James Meaby and Rupert Saunders.
Mr Downer, 35, from Kent, Mr Meaby and Mr Saunders, both 36 and both from London, disappeared from their yacht Ouzo last August.
The yacht had left Bembridge on the Isle of Wight on August 20 in order to sail to Devon for the Dartmouth Regatta.
However, the bodies of the three-men crew were discovered in the sea a few days later. Mr Meaby's body was discovered on August 22 - he died of a combination of drowning and hypothermia. The bodies of Mr Downer and Mr Saunders were discovered the following day - they had both died from drowning.
The yacht has never been found.
Mr Hubble was a senior ferry officer on board the Pride of Bilbao, which was on route to Spain at the time of the Ouzo's disappearance.
Mr Hubble was initially arrested on September 2 and released on police bail until Thursday.
The case had been adjourned to a hearing at Winchester Crown Court on February 16. Mr Hubble was released on bail without conditions.
