British tank driver injured in Basra explosion

The driver of a British Challenger 2 tank was seriously injured after the vehicle was damaged by a roadside bomb in Iraq.

The incident happened in a western district of Basra on April 6, while the tank had been on routine duties.

Another member of the three-man crew also suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Details of the attack only emerged on Monday. It is believed to be the first time that a Challenger has been damaged in such an attack.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said: "This was not in any way new technology - the device involved was the same type of shaped charge that we have seen used very regularly.

"No-one has ever said Challenger tanks are impenetrable. We have always said that a big enough bomb will defeat any armour, and any vehicle, and the Americans have lost many tanks in Baghdad."
