Arrest warrant extended over girl's shooting
Police investigating the shooting of a 12-year-old girl in Greater Manchester have been granted extra time to question a 16-year-old boy.
Kamilah Peniston was shot in the head at a house in Wembley Road in Gorton on Monday night.
She was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary for treatment and was later transferred to Pendlebury Children's Hospital, where she died on Tuesday morning.
The 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Police can continue questioning him until Thursday.
A handgun that had been converted to fire live ammunition was recovered from the address.
Police said that there was nothing to suggest that the incident was gang-related and said that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.
Detective Superintendent Ian Foster said: "This was a tragic event that has cost a young girl her life.
"Our deepest sympathies are with Kamilah's family at this sad time and we will be doing everything possible to find out what the circumstances were that led to her death.
"One thing I would like to stress is that this tragic incident shows the devastating impact that guns can have on our community.
"I would urge anyone who has any information about people who are selling guns, converting guns or who have them in their homes, to contact us. We need to take these weapons off the streets before another innocent life is needlessly taken."
Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact police on: 0161 856 2451 or Crimestoppers anonymously on: 0800 555 111.
