Comedian Bernard Manning dies

Controversial comic Bernard Manning has died in North Manchester General Hospital at the age of 76.

It is understood that he was being treated for a kidney problem at the hospital over the past two weeks and had been taken into intensive care at the weekend.

Born in the Ancoats area of Manchester, Manning worked in comedy clubs and Northern working men's clubs throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He became famous after making his television debut on Granada's stand-up comedy show 'The Comedians', before going on to compere 'The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club'.

Manning frequently courted controversy throughout his career, with critics claiming that much of his humour was racist. However, Manning denied being a racist.

In recent years, Manning appeared most frequently at The Embassy, the club he owned in Harpurhey in Manchester.

Footballer Faces Jail Over Blackmail Charge
A former Manchester City youth teamgoalkeeper is facing jail over blackmailing another player over sexual images. Ashley Timms, 22, a former Manchester City trainee, demanded £15,000 from the player, who cannot be named for legal reasons. Timms admitted blackmailing the player between March 1 and April 3 this year.
