Tories Call For 'Competitive' Tax Changes

A report from a Conservative policy group has recommended changes to taxation systems in the UK including abolition of inheritance tax.

The Economic Competitiveness Policy Group launched its report 'Freeing Britain to Compete' on Friday in which it made recommendations for inclusion in Conservative party manifesto.

Chaired by former Conservative Cabinet Minister John Redwood and the Chief Executive of Next fashion group Simon Wolfson, the group was set up by David Cameron in January 2006. The remit was to "undertake the long term thinking required to reverse the decline in Britain's competitiveness, and come forward with the policies needed for the new supply side revolution."

At the launch, Shadow Chancellor George Osborne said: "The Policy Group Report we launch today is the most impressive and comprehensive analysis of the state of the British economy produced by any political party in recent times."

He said: "The Report offers us a set of imaginative policy proposals directed at improving the competitiveness of our economy, rescuing our pension system and ensuring that more Britons and more parts of Britain share in the global prosperity of our times."

John Redwood, Co-Chairman of the Economic Competitiveness Policy Group added: "In this report we have kept at the top of our minds the need to offer hope to the 5.4m people of working age without a job, for the millions of people working in small businesses that just find the burdens from Government too great and the parts of the country furthest from London that have not enjoyed a rapid growth in financial and business services.

"That is why we propose better transport, less costly more effective regulation and lower business taxes. Ireland shows that if you cut capital taxes and business taxes you create more jobs, you generate more revenue and you have better public services."
