Couple Jailed For Abusing Infant
A couple have been jailed for nine years for abusing and torturing a 17-month-old boy.
Stepmother Sumairia Parveen, who had walked out on her husband to be with her cousin, abused stepson Tahla Ikram before his death in September 2006.
The father, Abid Ikram, 31, received a further 12 months for perverting the court of justice.
The child suffered multiple fractures and bruises as his limbs were twisted and pulled, he was burnt with cigarettes and his leg was sliced open until the tendons and veins were exposed, Southwark Crown Court heard.
Many of his injuries were ignored for days, causing him to scream as his broken bones ground together.
The couple, of Cheltenham Place, Ealing, west London, spent more than a week protesting their innocence.
Ikram told the court he "would never have hurt" his son, and Parveen insisted she had loved him as if he was her own.
The jury unanimously decided they were lying.
They were convicted of the "causing or allowing" offence, which does not require the individual who inflicted the fatal blow to be identified.
Both were banned for life from working with children and Parveen was recommended for deportation after her sentence.
