Foot-And-Mouth Confirmed At Third Surrey Farm
Tests on cattle at a third farm in Surrey have confirmed the presence of foot-and-mouth disease, it has been confirmed.
It is understood that the farm is within the existing 3km protection zone around Egham in Surrey, where the disease was found in slaughtered cattle at two other farms last week.
The strain found on the farms in the latest outbreak is believed to be the same found in two other outbreaks in the area last month.
A report suggested that the likely source of the outbreak was the nearby Pirbright research site, which is shared by private pharmaceutical company Merial and the Institute for Animal Health. However, the report said it was not clear which of the labs was responsible.
Scientists are working on the theory that the disease was carried through the air or in soil.
Shadow environment secretary Peter Ainsworth said: "This is disturbing news. All of us, especially in the farming community have been hoping that the outbreak is now over. It was caused by negligence by the government and its agencies. We have to hope that the government will now be competent in dealing with the clean-up."

FMD Restrictions Eased Outside England

The restrictions have been eased in order to allow farmers to transport livestock for slaughter, but they still remain unable to move animals for any other reasons.

Man Arrested Over Broadwater Farm Shooting
A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a double shooting at Broadwater Farm, Tottenham, on Sunday. Police were called after shots were heard being fired at around 23:42 on Sunday night. When police arrived, they found two men, both aged 21, suffering from gunshot wounds.

A pre-emptive slaughter of cattle at Milton Park Farm in Stroude Road in Egham is already underway and a 10km exclusion zone has been set by around the site, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed.

Second Outbreak Of Foot-And-Mouth Confirmed
A second case of foot-and-mouth has been confirmed at another farm in Surrey, close to the site of the first outbreak. The cattle at the farm was culled as soon as the signs were spotted on Monday, Environment Secretary Hilary Benn confirmed.
