Tribute Paid To Selfless Strangers In Portuguese Beach Tragedy
The families of the tragic Britons who died while trying to save children from strong sea currents in Portugal said the kindness of strangers will "never be forgotten".
Roy Dinsmore's wife, Jean Dinsmore, 43, died along with Robert Fry, 52, and Deborah Rose Fry, 48, after getting into difficulties off Praia do Tonel beach near Sagres on the Algarve on October 22.
The Frys' children, Rosie, 11, and George, nine, and Mrs Dinsmore's daughter Lydia, 11, and son Alexander, nine, survived the tragedy, along with her husband.
In a statement issued through police, Mr Dinsmore said he did not even know the names of those who had helped.
He said: "Last Monday we were involved in a tragic accident where those that lost their lives did so acting with the finest motives and this will come as no surprise to anyone who had the privilege to know them.
"The support which we have received from official agencies and commercial organisations, both here and in Portugal has been massive and much appreciated, but I want to finish by recognising the help we received from other holidaymakers on the beach in Sagres.
“Their names are all unknown to us but their kindness will never be forgotten."
Deputy Coroner for Wiltshire Peter Hatvany, sitting in Salisbury, previously opened and adjourned proceedings until a date to be fixed, when a full inquest into how all three died will be heard.
Lesley Spencer, Deborah Fry's sister, also said that just two weeks ago the families had been preparing to go on holiday.
She continued: "Six children and six adults all friends, sharing schools and a community.
"Three of the adults died saving the lives of some of their children.
"I would not have Rosie here today if Roy and Dean (Dean Plumb, a close family friend also on holiday) had not been ready to risk their lives and Jean, Deb and Bob prepared to lose theirs.
"Thank you and thanks to all the brave holidaymakers on that beach who battled to save the lives of strangers."
