New Photo Of 'Missing' Canoeist Released
Police investigating the case of John Darwin, the missing canoeist who reappeared after five years, have released a new photograph of him.
The photo shows the 57-year-old with a large beard. Detective Superintendent Tony Jutchinson also appealed for further information about Mr Darwin, revealing that he may have used the name John Jones during the five years that he was 'missing'.
Mr Darwin, who was presumed dead after the remains of his canoe were found on a beach in Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool in Teesside in March 2002, walked into a police station earlier this month and told officers that he could remember where he had been and thought he was a 'missing person'.
He was arrested last Tuesday at his son's house in Basingstoke in Hampshire on suspicion of fraud.
Det Supt Hutchinson said that Mr Darwin's sons, Mark and Anthony, appeared to be "victims" in the case. He said: "If that is the case, they have been duped in what can only be described as a really disgraceful fashion. They have been led to believe for the last five years that their father is dead."
Mr Darwin appeared before Hartlepool Magistrates' Court on Monday. He was charged with making an untrue statement to get a passport and obtaining life insurance policy money by deception.
He was remanded in custody to reappear in court on December 14.
Mr Darwin's wife Anne was arrested on Sunday, after flying into Manchester Airport from Panama, where she recently re-located allegedly using funds partly raised from her husband's life insurance.
Cleveland Police questioned the 55-year-old after she underwent a medical examination.
