Home Repossessions On The Rise
The number of people whose homes were repossessed last year rose by more than 20%, according to the latest figures released by the Council of Mortgage Lenders.
The new figures showed that 27,100 homes were taken over by lenders in 2007 after people fell behind with repayments - the highest figure since 1999.
Although the figure is less than the 30,000 which the CML had originally predicted, it still represents a sharp increase from the figure of 8,500 in 2003.
The CML is warning that the number of repossessions could continue to rise this year due to added pressures for homeowners, including higher energy and food prices and an estimated 1.4 million coming off fixed rate mortgage deals and facing rises in their monthly repayments.
